Reptile Travel tips

Unless you’re relocating or facing an emergency, it really isn't a good idea to travel with reptiles. (In other words, don't take your iguana on a camping trip!) However, if traveling with your reptile is your only option, here are some tips:

  • Find a cage (or dog carrier) that will safely hold your reptile. Generally, a smaller enclosure is better—it may prevent your pet from being jostled.
  • Always think of the ambient temperature. Extremely hot temperatures are just as deadly as extremely cold temperatures. (Ice under a carrier can cool a reptile when it's too hot; portable chemical heat packs can warm a reptile.)
  • Don't be surprised if your reptile won’t eat while traveling, but take steps to avoid dehydration. You can give your reptile Gatorade or Pedialyte by eyedropper or by needleless syringe if he isn't drinking water.
